“…You’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.” Philippians 4:8
Jerry and Bo met at their small Texas town’s community pool at the tender ages of 11 and 8 years old.
Love at first sight.
They dated and later married, never looking at any one except the other.
The only one whom they loved more than each other was Jesus. Because Jerry and Bo loved Jesus, they raised a family full of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who also love Jesus.
They served their church, their friends, and their community. They loved people.
Their home was always open and inviting.
Many were introduced to Jesus in their home.
Many learned how to live by just being around them.
They built a successful business with branches that reach around the world.
Bo’s mother lived with them for many, many years. Jerry said that he knew that his mother-in-law and Bo were a package deal when he asked Bo to marry him and he embraced the challenge of living with 2 women!
They were married for 66 years, but they actually lived a magnificent life together for almost 80 years.
They are no longer “of this world” and this place is less because of it.
Today they are united again in the place they always dreamed of. The place where they deposited all of their treasure. The place where Jesus had gone before and prepared a mansion for them.
And their love story continues for eternity.
COMPELLING
“To evoke interest in a powerfully irresistible way.”
Jerry and Bo’s story is compelling.
Their life makes me want my life to be better – more.
Their love makes me want to love better – more.
Their legacy makes me want to pay closer attention to where my treasure is being deposited.
I share the story of Jerry and Bo today as an example of what “compelling” looks like.
COMPELLING
To “think on things that are compelling” means to spend time pondering and considering things that we find powerfully interesting to the point of being irresistible.
They get in us.
The pondering of compelling things changes us, and then our story becomes compelling, too.
The influence of one compelling story multiplies exponentially.
Stop and ponder something that is compelling to you. It may be Jerry and Bo’s story or another story. Or a life well (or not so well) lived.
Or nature.
Or a work of art.
Or a song.
As you take a minute and ponder, let yourself be compelled into THE story. Take it in. Give it a minute to pervade your thoughts.
Now, let it in. Let it fertilize the field of your life.
Let Jesus change your life.
What does this make you want to do so your life will be compelling also?
Ask Daddy for help and receive it!
