“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6
Corrie’s family were the town’s watch repairers. Established, middle class, Christians. Corrie, her parents, brother, and sister Betsy were a loving and caring family. Then one day, Nazi Germany invaded Holland, and everything changed.
Being non – Jews, the Ten Boom family was able to function somewhat freely. However, they quickly saw that this was not the case for their Jewish friends. It began with every Jew being required to sew a Star of David patch onto their clothing, and post “juden” signs on their businesses. Then, they began to disappear. Rumors spread that they were being loaded onto cattle cars and taken to ‘camps’ … and never coming back. The Ten Booms had to do something, so they began to shelter endangered Jews.
Due to the unique design of their home, they were able to hide many Jews in the walls and help them escape to freedom. One day, they were betrayed and imprisoned. Their father died quickly. Brother died too.
Corrie and Betsy were moved to the concentration camp at Ravensbruck, Germany. For ten months they and the other prisoners suffered inhuman treatment. Many died, including Betsy. While enduring the unspeakable atrocities, they never lost faith in God.
Miraculously, shortly after Betsy’s death, Corrie was released. Then the war ended. Corrie Ten Boom knew that she had to tell the world about the camp and about faith in Jesus. She began traveling and speaking anywhere someone would let her.
One day as she was speaking she recognized one of the Ravensbruck guards in the crowd. He had been especially cruel to Betsy. After she finished speaking, he approached her. “I was a guard at Ravensbruck. By a miracle of God, I have become a Christian. I have prayed and asked for the opportunity to ask someone from the camp for forgiveness. Would you forgive me?” Corrie instantly knew that she could not. All that she could think of was how cruel this man had been to her sister. She quickly turned to The Lord and said “Lord, help!”
HUMBLE – asking for help
Instantly, revelation came. She was not expected to conjure up love for this man from her heart and mind but, she could receive it from The Holy Spirit. “There was hatred and bitterness in my heart as I remembered how my sister had suffered. But I knew that hatred equated to murder in God’s eyes. I asked Him to forgive my hatred. And He took it away. And then I thanked Him for bringing out His heart through the power of The Holy Spirit. I thanked Him for winning over hatred. And I said ‘Brother, I forgive you.’”
This is a really simple word… HUMBLE – asking for help We all need help. The question is “are we going to ask HIM for help or not.”
STOP and ask for help. Do it now.
